Breakfast literally means to “break a fast”. It is the reintroduction of food into our body after going all night without eating. Breakfast is especially important for kids because it helps wake up the body and get it ready for all of the activities of the day – including learning at school, running around outside, and helping us use all of the food we eat during the rest of the day. Breakfast also plays a key role in helping to prevent overweight or obesity in children.
You’ve probably heard the phrase “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” But why exactly is breakfast so important? There is a strong correlation between eating breakfast and maintaining a healthy weight. Skipping meals can often lead to poor food choices made out of excess hunger. For most individuals, especially growing children and teens, breakfast can also help improve cognitive function and concentration. Your body needs fuel to function, so it’s important to nourish it with the right foods.

Include complex carbohydrates. Add a lean protein source. Don’t skimp on fruits and vegetables.
You would never drive your car for hours after the gas light goes on. The same goes for your body. When you wake up in the morning, your body is low on energy, or fuel. Eating early in the day helps to fill up your body’s “tank” and gets your body ready for the day ahead. Eating breakfast also supplies your brain with glucose which has been shown to boost memory.
Most importantly, breakfast provides our bodies with essential nutrients first thing in the morning. Most people don’t get enough of the key ingredients, like fiber and potassium, that breakfast supplies. Research shows that when you skip breakfast, you are very unlikely to make up for the loss of nutrients later in the day.
When choosing what to eat for your breakfast, try to eat whole foods that are full of nutrients. Examples include eggs, yogurt, oatmeal, fruit, and whole wheat toast. Try to limit sugary cereals, white bread, and other highly processed foods.
Breakfast is an excellent occasion to eat together as a family when possible. Establishing good breakfast habits in childhood and maintaining them throughout adolescence may be an important factor in reducing the prevalence of breakfast skipping and developing good eating habits that last a lifetime.
