How Did Clothes Dryers Start?

Drying clothes has been a time-consuming procedure since the time of the ancient Romans until the mid-1900s. People used to hang up or lay their garments outside to dry after wringing out extra water.

In the early 1900s, a North Dakota farmer became dissatisfied with the inefficiency of hanging garments out to dry in the middle of winter and began researching more practical methods of drying clothing. J. Ross Moore first constructed a shed to hang clothes in before adding a tiny oven inside to use as a heat source. Moore expanded on his ideas, creating an oil-heated drum to dry his clothing before selling the idea to a Wisconsin manufacturer. The June Day was the first consumer clothes drier, and it was introduced in 1938.

Electric dryers remained a luxury item for many during the 1940s. Only a small percentage of households owned a clothes dryer in 1955. Clothes dryers gained popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and by 1963, over a quarter of households possessed a clothes dryer. When the first clothes dryers that vented outside the home were manufactured in 1958, sales continued to rise.

Some Items You Shouldn’t Dry in the Clothes Dryer, and WhySome items should never be dried in the dryer.

Bras, Tights, and Nylons – I must admit that I do tend to put these things in the dryer, despite the fact that it may degrade their quality. Elastic and Spandex are used in bras to provide additional physical support. Dryers can reduce the strength of bras. However, I believe it is personally worthwhile to take the risk.

Bras and tights can be stored in a wash bag. Their hooks, straps, and so on can easily become entangled with other clothing. A netted washbag can assist prevent this from happening.

Lace, Chiffon, and Silk are delicate fabrics that can easily catch on to other objects. Furthermore, the dryer might leave permanent creases in the material.

Heat is not kind to leather, suede, or even faux leather. It might deform their shape or just destroy their appearance.

Velvet – It is not advised for the dryer since it will lose its appearance. Dry cleaning is advised.

Spandex – A flexible textile that can be damaged by dryer heat. Some are fine to include, while others are not. It’s a good idea to double-check the clothes tags.

Natural vs. Faux Fur  – Heat is bad for the fabric, and it loses its natural appearance. Bathing suits, it appears, retain their form better when left to dry naturally. Although I must admit that this is another thing that I occasionally risk putting in the dryer.

Wool, Cashmere, Rayon, and other knitted fibers will shrink as a result of the heat. Once spun, I let my woolens dry over the back of a chair wrapped in a towel. To avoid overstretching the arms, I wrap them over the chair as well. Please, however, follow the washing recommendations.
