What’s The Love Thing?


It means different things for different people. Particularly for us adults affected by my experience and my viewpoint. 

What does it mean to the little ones, who are honest, carefree, sincere, unadulterated in the world?

A panel of experts asked a group of 4 to 8-year-olds, ‘What does love mean? The responses they obtained were wider, simpler, and deeper than anyone could have ever expected. 

‘When my grandma had asthma, she couldn’t lean over to polish her toenails. And my grandfather does that for her all the time, even though his hands have arthritis. This is passion.’ Becky-8 years of age.

‘The way they pronounce your name is different because someone likes you. You remember, your name is safe in their lips.’ Ben-4 years of age. 

‘Love is when you go out to eat and give the most of your French fries to someone without making them give you any of theirs.’ Rizey – 6 years of age.

‘Love is what makes you happy when you’re exhausted.’ Rita –  4 years of age.

‘Love is when my mom prepares my dad’s coffee and takes a drink before handing it to him to make sure the flavor is OK.’ Dave -8 years of age.

‘Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas, if you stop opening the gifts and just listen to it.’ -Bob 7 years of age (Wow…).

‘If you want to learn to love better, you can start with a friend you despise.’ Nikka – 6 years of age (Amazing!!)

‘Joy is when you tell a man that you like his shirt, he wears it every day.’ Noelle-7 years of age. 

‘Love is like a little old lady and a little old man who are both friends even though they know each other too well.’ Tom – 6 years of age.

‘I was on stage during my piano recital, and I was terrified. I looked at all the people watching me, and I saw my dad waving and laughing.

He was the first one to do so. I was no longer afraid.’ Cindy-8 years of age.

‘My mommy loves me more than anyone else. You don’t see anybody else hugging me to sleep at night.’ Clare-6 years old.

‘Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best slice of chicken.– Lany 5 years of age.

‘Love is when Mommy finds Daddy smelly and sweaty, and always thinks he’s more handsome than Robert Redford.’ 

‘Love is when the dog licks your face long though you’ve left him alone all day.’ 

‘I know that my older sister likes me because she sends me all her old clothes and she has to go out and find some new ones.’ Harry-7 years of age.

‘If you love someone, your eyelashes go up and down and the little stars fly out of you.’ (What a picture!) Karen-7 years of age.
