Importance of Cleaning a Split AC

Cleaning your split AC is critical to ensuring optimal performance and avoiding costly repairs. Accumulated dust and debris can negatively impact the airflow, reduce efficiency, and lower the cooling capacity of the unit. A dirty AC unit can also lead to a poorer quality of air as it circulates allergens and bacteria. Regular cleaning prevents dust buildup and ensures the AC functions properly. Keeping your AC clean prolongs its lifespan, reduces energy consumption, and lowers electricity bills. By avoiding breakdowns and extending the life of your unit, you could save a significant amount of money in the long run. Regular cleaning is a straightforward process and can typically be done with common household tools. Also, hiring a professional is always advisable to ensure a thorough clean, which provides optimal performance, greater energy savings, and a healthier home environment.

Frequency of cleaning

When it comes to the frequency of cleaning a split AC, the general rule of thumb is to clean it at least once every three months. However, the actual cleaning frequency may vary depending on the usage, location, and environmental conditions. Homes located in dusty or polluted areas may need more frequent cleaning, while homes with pets may require cleaning more often due to pet hair and dander. Additionally, homes with smokers may need more frequent cleaning as smoke can accumulate on the AC coils. In cases where the AC unit is used frequently or non-stop, such as in commercial settings or large homes, it may be necessary to clean the unit more often.

Steps for Clean a Split AC

(1) Preparation and steps for normal split AC

For normal split AC, to clean a split AC effectively, it’s essential to have the right tools. The most important tools include a screwdriver, soft brush, vacuum cleaner, water spray bottle, cleaning solution, gloves, mask, and towels. The screwdriver will help you remove the outer covers of the AC unit to access the internal components. A soft brush is necessary to clean the fins, coils, and other delicate parts of the unit without damaging them. A water spray bottle can be used to spray water onto the fins and internal components of the AC. It’s essential to use a mild cleaning solution and avoid harsh chemicals or solvents that can damage the unit. Gloves and a mask will protect you from contaminants present on the unit. Finally, towels or rags can be used to wipe down the unit and dry it after cleaning to prevent any damage from moisture.

  • 1.Turn off the AC unit: Before cleaning the split air conditioner, turn off the power supply to avoid any electrical hazards.

  • 2.Remove the indoor unit cover: Take off the front cover of the indoor unit by pulling it upwards or pressing it inward, depending on the model of the AC.

  • 3.Remove and clean the air filter: Remove the air filter from the front cover and clean it using a soft brush or wash it with running water, depending on the filter type. If the filter is very dirty or damaged, replace it with a new one.

  • 4.Clean the condenser coil: Spray a coil cleaning agent on the condenser coil and let it sit for 10-15 minutes to allow it to break down the dirt and debris. Gently scrub the coil with a soft brush, then rinse it thoroughly with water.

  • 5.Clean the evaporator coil: Apply the coil cleaner onto the evaporator coil and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Then use a soft-bristle brush or cloth to clean it, ensuring that there is no dirt or debris left.

  • 6.Clean the fan blades: Use a soft cloth to remove any dirt or dust deposits on the fan blades and the blower wheel.

  • 7.Clean the drain pan and drain pipes: Use a wet/dry vacuum or a long brush to remove any debris or dust from the drain pan and drain pipes. Ensure there is no clogging or water leakage.

  • 8.Put everything back together: After cleaning all the necessary components, reattach the front cover and turn on the power supply.
